Otology and Neurotology

People often ask what is Otology/Neurotology?  In brief, it is a sub-specialty of ENT that deals with the surgical and medical management of the ear and it’s surrounding structures.  Common disorders seen in our clinics include hearing loss, balance disorders, chronic ear infections, vertigo and tumors of the ear and skull base.  We also specialize in the management of Facial nerve disorders. To become trained in Neuro-Otologic Surgery, a physician obtains additional training beyond the ENT residency by completing a fellowship in the sub-specialty of Neurotology.

More about Frank M. Warren, MD

Dr. Frank Warren joined the faculty at the University of Utah after completing a fellowship in Neurotology at The Otology Group of Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.   Dr. Warren completed the remainder of his medical training in his home state of Oregon at Oregon Health and Science University, where he went to medical school and competed his residency.  Dr. Warren’s practice is solely focused on Neurotology.  Dr. Warren enjoys this “super-specialist” outlook on his practice as it allows him to provide patients with the most current and “state-of-the-art” care for their ear problems.

Dr. Warren’s clinical interests include cochlear implantation, management of Acoustic Neuromas and skull base tumors, chronic ear disease, Meniere’s Disease and balance disorders.  His research interests include hearing restoration and applications of new technology to the practice of Neurotology.  His current research projects include the development of an intraneural auditory implant (to restore hearing) and developing improved techniques to image the inner ear using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
